Turn all of Hytale's vanilla animals into interactive livestock and long-term companions, worth caring for.

Animal Husbandry gives every vanilla animal, from mice to dinosaurs, deeper gameplay built around taming, ownership, needs, happiness, traits, growth, commands, and progression.

It also adds animal behaviors that make the world feel more alive, from herds traveling and grazing together to ducks flying in V-shaped formations and small birds pecking at the ground.

New in v4.1.0

Animals now step around when they turn on the spot instead of spinning in place, with a turning animation for every tameable animal and the Frost Dragon. Wild Frost Dragons cruise and soar while idle in flight. Keep an eye on your chicken coops around the new moon for a rare, see-through visitor. Supports Hytale 0.6.7 and later in Update 6, and Hytale 0.7. Requires Tamework 5.4.0 or later in the 5.x series.

Butcher's Knife

Craft a Butcher's Knife at an Animal Husbandry Workbench using 2 Iron Ingots and 2 Light Leather. Hold primary use for 0.8 seconds to cull an owned, tamed animal. The knife uses a custom cleaver model, hand-painted texture, and matching inventory icon.

Lil Cluck

Summon Lil Cluck by crouch-interacting with your own tamed chick while holding a gold ingot. The chick consumes one ingot and becomes a hostile boss at full health, and is no longer your companion. You can also use /npc spawn AH_Chicken_Chick_Boss. This oversized chick wears sunglasses and a gold chain. During combat, players within 40 blocks see his native boss health bar. Natural health regeneration is disabled until he leaves combat. Dodge three pursuing pecks, bait its charge into a wall, and avoid marked eggs that burst into feathers or hatch chasing chicks. He cannot choose Egg Drop twice in a row. At 75% health, it crouches before leaping onto your position captured at takeoff and releases a jumpable, expanding ring of feathers on landing. Move after takeoff to dodge. Solid terrain can block the leap. The leap has an 8-second cooldown. At 50% health, Peep Show lowers his sunglasses for a one-second warning while turning to face you, then sweeps a red eye laser for 10 seconds. Run sideways to outrun its 30-degree-per-second turn or take cover behind terrain. The beam has a 10-second cooldown after firing. Hatchlings peck with a visible windup and remain until killed. The boss does not spawn naturally.

Update Animal Husbandry and Tamework together. The fight requires Tamework 5.0.0 or later in the 5.x series.

Adult Aging

Animals progress from Adult to Prime and freeze there by default. Administrators can enable the full Adult, Prime, and Senior lifecycle and optional old-age death in /tw settings. Prime animals give full domestic slaughter yield; other adult stages give 50%. See the Breeding and Growth Guide for species timings.

Core Features

Animals That Feel More Alive
- Wild bison, deer, and livestock travel as herds, pausing to rest and graze. Bison also seek out water as part of their routines.
- Ducks fly in V-shaped formations, while hawks and vultures glide and circle overhead.
- Crows, pigeons, and small songbirds peck at the ground during idle moments.
Real Taming and Ownership
- Tame animals into persistent companions instead of treating them like disposable mob drops.
- Ownership is respected across companion systems, tied into the husbandry progression loop, and can optionally include revive support.
Needs and Happiness
- Animals have real hunger, thirst, and happiness systems that affect how well they thrive.
- They can automatically eat from storage, drink from nearby water or Feed Troughs, and only breed when properly cared for.
Breeding, Traits, and Bloodlines
- Build long-term breeding lines instead of relying on shallow one-off farming.
- Offspring inherit traits and attachments from their parents, with room to improve trait quality through selective breeding.
Life Stage Progression
- Animals grow from babies into adults as part of the normal companion loop.
- Raising young animals into mature, high-quality companions is a core part of progression.
XP Levels and Talents
- Tamed companions gain XP from care, harvest, breeding, and combat activities that fit their role.
- Leveling is intentionally long-term, especially for combat Beasts, with modest passive talents that improve health, speed, utility, or damage.
Commandable Companions
- Control your animals with companion commands like Follow, Follow Close, Hold, Set Home, Return Home, and Recall.
- Combat-capable Beasts also support battle-focused commands like Defend and Attack Target.
- Call supported critters and flying companions onto your shoulder with the To Me action in their linked companion card.
Wild Flying Flocks
- Wild flying animals follow their flock leader through takeoff, flight, and landing, and alert the flock when danger approaches.
- Offer their favorite food to bring them down. After you put it away, they stay calm and wander on the ground for a short time.
Extra Utility
- Name your tamed animals with Nametags and manage them more cleanly as part of your homestead.
- Equip supported owned animals with persistent saddles and colored wool blankets.
- Soul Lantern capture items and upgraded coops preserve important animal data like traits and attachments instead of wiping them on respawn.

Getting Started

Livestock and neutral wildlife are tamed identically to base Hytale: just feed their favorite food.
Aggressive predators, called Beasts, require more steps to weaken and capture, akin to Pokémon or Monster Hunter.

After taming, link neutral animals with Animal Control Flute, and predators with Combat Beast Flute, to manage their health and happiness. Craft flutes at an Animal Husbandry Workbench.
- Right-click with a flute to open the command interface.
- Left-click with a flute to link animals and issue group commands.
- Interact, default keybind F, handles most other interactions.
Keep working with your companions to level them over time.
- Livestock progress mainly from feeding, harvests, and breeding.
- Neutral wildlife and critters progress from care-focused activities, with only light combat XP where appropriate.
- Combat Beasts level the slowest and gain most of their progress from real combat plus long-term care.
Animals need access to food, water, and protected space to roam and socialize.
- Use Feed Troughs to give your animals food and water.
- Animals will only eat their preferred food, which is also used for taming, or crafted feed that matches their food profile.
- The command HUD shows each animal's food options and happiness effects.
- Passive breeding occurs with high happiness and is toggled per animal in the command flute interface.
- Fertility can intentionally produce zero through four offspring. Manual and passive attempts share the same hard nearby-population limit, including already pending litters.
- Capturing either parent into a Tamework-managed coop before birth cancels the pending litter.
Safely capture animals with the Soul Lantern, crafted at an Animal Husbandry Workbench.
- This will save the animal's data like skins, name, traits, etc. so it's always respawned the same.
- Do not use the base game Capture Crate! This resets your animal's data.
Mountable companions can be mounted by interacting while crouching.

Beast Taming

Predators and other combat-capable Beasts require a bit more effort to tame.

Craft tranquilizer gear: Tranquilizer Potion, Tranquilizer Darts, and Tranquilizer Dart Rifle. Tamework 5.0.x names the last two Tranquilizer Arrows and Tranquilizer Shortbow.
Bring a Beast to 20% HP or lower.
Apply tranquilizer pressure until it is forced into sleep.
Tame the sleeping Beast with its preferred food.
Upgrade to the Combat Beast Flute once you can craft it with Wild Wisteria Logs, Shadoweave Fabric Scrap, Fire Essence, and Concentrated Life Essence.

Note: When you have a Glowing Purple Mushroom to spare, craft Glowing Purple Mushroom Spores at Farming Bench Tier 6 to make the tranquilizer ingredient renewable.

Customize the Experience

Animal Husbandry is built on Alec's Tamework!, so server owners and solo players can decide how involved the animal systems should be.

Preset	Best For	Behavior
Full Experience	Players who want the complete management loop.	Taming, needs, happiness, passive breeding, traits, progression, commands, and Beast systems are enabled.
Easier	Players who want care systems without harsh punishment.	Core systems stay enabled, but animals will not take starvation or hunger damage.
Simplified (Minecraft-like)	Minecraft-like play.	Simple taming and on-interact breeding only. Hunger, thirst, happiness, passive breeding, and traits are disabled.

Use /tw settings for the global preset and world-level toggles. Use /tw config for granular advanced tuning across Animal Husbandry and other Tamework-powered mods.

Adding to Existing Worlds

Adding the mod to an existing world is supported. Pre-existing tamed animals can be bridged into Tamework ownership on first successful interaction or command-link. If an older tamed animal does not respond to owner-restricted actions, interact with it or link it once to migrate it.

Telemetry

Alec's Tamework, and thus Alec's Animal Husbandry utilizes Beacon to report crash, error, performance, and usage telemetry data to the developer.

This data is anonymous and does not contain any personally identifiable information, and is exclusively used to diagnose issues in the mod to provide a better user experience.

You may review or change consent at any time with /beacon consent.

When telemetry stats are enabled, Alec's Tamework also reports anonymized active user numbers to HStats to track active user count summaries.

Companion icon mappings live in `Server/Tamework/DynamicIcons/` and are shared by capture items and both command panels. Animal Husbandry 4.1.0 requires Tamework 5.4.0 or later in the 5.x series; update both mods together. Default portraits cover every supported animal. Current Aures Livestock/Horse and Celly skin variants use selected coat and major-feature mappings; small details can differ to keep the icon set manageable.
