Capturing Dragons
Parent: Companion Guides | Home
Capture applies to eligible full dragons: Hydra, Toxic Hydra, Nordic Drake, and the Young, standard, and Frost Rock Drakes. A Miniwyvern is created through a Soul Bond instead; see Soul Bond and Attunement.
Before you start
- Carry the Dragon Command Flute so the new companion can be stored in your roster.
- Make sure the flute can accept another stored companion and keep a safe retreat route.
- Find an eligible full dragon and lower its health. Lower health improves the chance of a successful attempt.
- Tranquilize the dragon before channeling.
- Carry a Draconic Stone and stay close enough for the channel to remain connected.
Capture steps
- Fight the dragon until its health is low enough for a sensible attempt.
- Tranquilize it and wait for the capture opening.
- Hold the Draconic Stone's capture action for the full three-second channel. Releasing early or losing the target interrupts the attempt.
- Keep the dragon tranquilized, remain in range, and keep the flute and roster requirements valid until the channel resolves.
- A success bonds the dragon to you and places it in the Dragon Command Flute roster.
When is a stone consumed?
| Outcome | Stone result |
|---|---|
| You release the action, lose range, or the prerequisites become invalid | No stone is consumed. |
| The channel resolves as a success | One stone is consumed. |
| The channel resolves as a failed capture | One stone is consumed. |
An interrupted or invalid attempt is different from a resolved failure: only a resolved success or failure spends the stone.
Suggested stone progression
Every stone tier can attempt every eligible full dragon. Stronger stones improve the chance, but the list below is a practical progression rather than a set of hard gates.
| Stone | A sensible target |
|---|---|
| Iron | Young Rock Drake |
| Thorium | Rock Drake |
| Cobalt | Frost Rock Drake or Hydra |
| Adamantium | Nordic Drake and other difficult hunts |
| Ancient | A guaranteed valid attempt after all prerequisites remain satisfied |
You do not need a mandatory minimum stone tier for a species. An Ancient stone still requires the Dragon Command Flute, an eligible full dragon, tranquilization, a valid roster, and a connected channel.
Improve your odds
Lower the dragon's health without killing it, keep it tranquilized, and use a stronger stone when you can afford one. Plan extra stones for resolved failures; you keep the stone when an attempt is interrupted or invalid because it never reaches a resolution.
Next steps
- Compare habitats and combat roles in the Dragon Compendium.
- Open the Dragon Command Flute after a successful capture.
- Review Summoning and Revival before a long expedition.
