Rock Drakes
Parent: Dragon Compendium | Home
Young, standard, and Frost Rock Drakes form a natural ground-mount progression. All three are uncommon cave spawns, use boulder attacks, and can carry you over ground terrain; the variant determines the zone, cave depth, appearance, and materials you can expect from the hunt.
Compare the variants
| Variant | Where to search | Appearance | Suggested stone | Mount and combat | Typical drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Young Rock Drake | Zone 1 regular caves at middle depth, before the volcanic lava layer | Stone-skinned | Iron | Slow ground mount; boulder attacks | 2–3 scales, 2–3 plain essence, 1–2 Nature essence; Fire essence may also drop |
| Rock Drake | Zone 2's deepest volcanic and lava caves only | Magma-rock skin | Thorium | Slow ground mount; boulder attacks | 3–4 scales, 3–4 plain essence, 2–3 Nature essence; Fire essence may also drop |
| Frost Rock Drake | Zone 3 caves from middle depth through the deepest volcanic sections | Frosted ice skin | Cobalt | Slow ground mount; boulder attacks | 4–5 scales, 4–5 plain essence, 3–4 Nature essence; Ice essence may also drop |
The listed material quantities are drop ranges. Optional Fire or Ice essence is not guaranteed on every defeat.
A smooth capture progression
The stone column is a practical recommendation, not a hard restriction:
- Start with Iron for a Young Rock Drake in Zone 1's regular middle-depth caves.
- Move to Thorium for the standard Rock Drake in Zone 2's deepest volcanic and lava caves.
- Use Cobalt for Frost Rock Drakes in Zone 3's middle-to-deep caves.
Any eligible stone can attempt a full-dragon capture. Bring a tranquilizer, lower the Drake's health, and channel the stone only when the capture opening is ready. See Capturing Dragons for the exact sequence and what happens when a channel is interrupted.
Combat and mount identity
Rock Drakes are slow, heavy ground mounts rather than flight mounts. They trade travel speed for a sturdy feel and their shared boulder attack, so keep a target in front of the Drake and use terrain to control the approach. Talent points can specialize the roster entry for damage, toughness, footing, or summon convenience; see Leveling and Talents.
